Special Review Ordered into NHS Trust That Treated Nottingham Killer

Victims' Families Call for Public Inquiry, Questioning Care Received by Valdo Calocane Prior to Fatal Stabbings

  • Valdo Calocane, who was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia, fatally stabbed three people in Nottingham in June 2023. He was sentenced to detention in a high-security hospital after his manslaughter plea was accepted.
  • The victims' families have questioned the care Calocane received before the killings. Calocane had been in and out of Nottinghamshire Healthcare Foundation Trust's Highbury hospital due to his mental health problems.
  • Health and Social Care Secretary Victoria Atkins has ordered a special review into Nottinghamshire Healthcare Foundation Trust. The review, conducted by The Care Quality Commission (CQC), will present its findings on patient and public safety, and on the quality of care provided across the trust in March.
  • The families of the victims have called for a full public inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the attack. They are due to meet Ms Atkins as well as Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer.
  • Leicestershire Police has referred itself to a watchdog over its investigation into alleged attacks by Calocane in May 2023 – weeks before he knifed three people to death.
