Special Counsel to Indict Ex–First Lady Kim Keon Hee With Detention on Friday

The move would make a former presidential couple stand trial under arrest together for the first time.

  • Prosecutors said they will file the indictment two days before her pretrial arrest expires.
  • Kim declined to testify during a fifth in-person questioning Thursday after largely remaining silent in earlier sessions.
  • Allegations include stock manipulation involving Deutsch Motors, interference in 2022 by-election and 2024 general election nominations, and receipt of luxury gifts from the Unification Church via a shaman in exchange for favors.
  • She was arrested on Aug. 12 on suspected violations of the Capital Market Act, the Political Funds Act, and a mediation-bribery law, and has been held since Aug. 13.
  • Investigators also plan to indict aide Kim Ye-seong with detention over a 3.38 billion won embezzlement at IMS Mobility, and recent raids targeting suspected jewelry providers could lead to additional counts.
