Special Counsel Summons Yoon Over Alleged Pyongyang Drone Order as Court Weighs Arrest of Unification Church Leader

Prosecutors say the 2024 mission may have bypassed the chain of command to set up a martial law pretext.

Overview

  • Former President Yoon Suk Yeol has been summoned for Wednesday questioning on treason and insurrection allegations tied to an October 2024 drone operation targeting Pyongyang, his first treason-focused session.
  • Investigators suspect Yoon instructed Maj. Gen. Kim Yong-dae to execute the mission outside the defense ministry and Joint Chiefs of Staff chain of command to provoke the North.
  • The special counsel has already questioned senior officers, including Lt. Gen. Lee Seung-oh and Joint Chiefs Chair Adm. Kim Myung-soo, regarding the drone flight allegations.
  • A separate court hearing is set for Monday at 1:30 p.m. to decide on an arrest warrant for Unification Church leader Han Hak-ja over suspected illegal political funds, anti-graft violations, embezzlement and evidence tampering linked to gifts for former first lady Kim Keon Hee and 100 million won to Rep. Kweon Seong-dong.
  • Han appeared for questioning after three prior refusals citing health concerns, a 4 p.m. hearing will address a warrant for her former chief of staff, and Yoon’s compliance with the summons remains uncertain.
