Special Counsel Raids Rep. Choo Kyung-ho, Names Him a Suspect in Martial Law Probe

Prosecutors are scrutinizing call logs linked to venue changes they say impeded a repeal vote.

Overview

  • Investigators searched Choo’s residences and offices in Seoul and Daegu and designated him a suspect on insurrection-related duties and abuse of power charges.
  • Call records obtained by the special counsel show Choo spoke with senior aide Hong Chul-ho and then Prime Minister Han Duck-soo before phoning former President Yoon shortly after the declaration.
  • Prosecutors allege Choo, then the PPP floor leader, shifted a party meeting between the National Assembly and party headquarters three times, after which only 18 of 108 PPP lawmakers were present for the repeal vote.
  • The team seized two aides’ mobile phones and searched offices including those of Rep. Cho Ji-yeon and the PPP floor leader, returning Wednesday to pursue an Assembly office raid after access was disputed the previous day.
  • Choo denies wrongdoing, citing misunderstandings and entry limits at the Assembly, while investigators maintain travel restrictions, analyze seized data, and plan further questioning of lawmakers.
