Overview

• Former SSP Bhupinderjit Singh, retired DSP Devinder Singh, Inspectors Suba Singh and Gulbarg Singh, and ASI Raghubir Singh were found guilty and taken into custody following Friday’s judgment.
• The court convicted them of criminal conspiracy, abduction, extrajudicial killings and destruction of evidence in two staged encounters in June and July 1993.
• CBI opened the probe in 1999 after a 1996 Supreme Court order and filed its primary chargesheet in 2002, but repeated adjournments and stays delayed the trial until now.
• Five other accused officers died during the proceedings and one turned prosecution witness, highlighting challenges in securing justice for insurgency-era human rights abuses.
