SPD Front-Runner Kämpfer Rules Out Coalition With Die Linke

The move frames a centrist, stability-first campaign that narrows feasible post-election coalitions ahead of the April 2027 vote.

Overview

  • On Monday Ulf Kämpfer, the SPD Spitzenkandidat, told dpa he sees no prospect for a coalition with Die Linke because of big differences on internal security, budgets and economic policy.
  • Kämpfer also rejected a four-party alliance involving Die Linke, calling the party politically isolated and unready to assume government responsibility.
  • He presented a Plan A of a renewed Küstenkoalition with the Greens and the SSW as his preferred route back to the Staatskanzlei and said that coalition offers the stability the state needs.
  • On housing policy Kämpfer rejected Berlin-style expropriations and instead proposed expanded public building, new state and local housing companies, a five-year social-housing funding guarantee and more municipal planning freedom.
  • Recent polls show a fragmented field with the CDU leading, the AfD gaining and Die Linke near the threshold, meaning Kämpfer’s exclusions and housing pitch will shape which coalitions are mathematically and politically possible after the April 2027 election.
