Sparkasse Warns of Phone Scams Tied to PayPal Outage

Sparkasse reports fraudsters posing as staff to obtain TANs, urging immediate account blocking if credentials were shared.

Overview

  • Criminals are spoofing bank calls, claiming to fix PayPal debits and pushing victims to “cancel” transactions by providing TANs that actually authorize transfers to the scammers.
  • The Sparkassen-Computer-Notfallteam advises never sharing PINs, TANs or passwords and not approving chipTAN or pushTAN requests made by callers.
  • If data was disclosed or a release was approved, customers should immediately block online banking via 116116 or by three incorrect PIN entries and then contact their branch for a possible transfer recall.
  • PayPal has acknowledged a service disruption and is working with banks to reprocess blocked SEPA direct debits, and users are urged to review recent account activity and be alert to phishing.
  • Banks reportedly blocked mass direct debits after a single fraudulent transaction exceeding €1 billion, which delayed merchant payouts before processing was largely restored.
