Overview

  • The Juan Sebastián Elcano docked at Pier 88 on June 4, completing its six-month Americas deployment before returning to Spain.
  • The vessel’s 97th training cruise spanned roughly 20,000 miles and included stops in Salvador de Bahía, Montevideo, Valparaíso and Santo Domingo, among other ports.
  • Princess Leonor has served as a guardiamarina since January and will leave the Elcano in New York to join the frigate Blas de Lezo for the next phase of her naval training.
  • While anchored off Manhattan, the crew held a ceremony honoring two sailors who died when Mexico’s training ship Cuauhtémoc collided with the Brooklyn Bridge on May 17.
  • During the New York visit, Leonor is scheduled to attend a Teatro Real concert at Carnegie Hall and act as abanderada in the Elcano’s flag-raising ceremony this Friday.
