Spanish Man Awarded €49,000 After 30-Hour Medical Emergency

A delayed diagnosis and inadequate treatment for a prolonged medical condition led to lasting complications and a legal settlement.

A 36-year-old paraplegic man in Spain experienced a 30-hour priapism, a prolonged and painful erection, in July 2020.
He visited the emergency room three times, but medical staff initially failed to provide effective treatment, delaying specialized care.
The man underwent two surgeries, including the removal of a penile implant, but continues to suffer from pain and erectile dysfunction.
A legal investigation found medical errors and late intervention, resulting in a €49,000 compensation for the man and €5,000 for his wife for emotional distress.
The compensation will be paid by the Health Ministry of Valencia, as determined by the region's legal advisory council.
