Spanish Household Food Intake Falls as Grocery Bills Rise

High food prices have driven a shift toward more affordable cooking staples, with pricier oils and seafood consumption falling.

  • Total household consumption of food and beverages fell 0.2% to 30.668 million kilos/liters in 2024 even as spending rose 2.4% to €119.667 billion.
  • The average Spanish household spent €1,787 on groceries, while Basque, Catalan and Balearic residents each averaged over €2,050—around 25% more than those in Extremadura, Andalusia and Castilla-La Mancha.
  • Consumers boosted egg purchases by 2.9% and sunflower oil by 7.9%, while seafood volumes dropped 3.7% and olive oil consumption fell 2.0% even as its value grew 16.4%.
  • Supermarkets accounted for 67.2% of total food volume and grew market share by 1.8%, while hypermarkets and traditional outlets lost ground and online sales inched up 0.8%.
  • Households reduced food waste by 15.8% compared to 2016 and adopted air fryers for 4.0% of meal occasions, with 94% of Spaniards maintaining breakfast at home.
