Spanish Court Forces Airbnb to Remove Nearly 66,000 Illegal Short-Term Rentals

This follows July’s launch of a mandatory national rental registry, leading officials to flag over 54,700 additional unregistered listings for compliance review.

Overview

  • Airbnb also took down 703 listings in Euskadi after hosts failed to include the region’s required tourism registration numbers.
  • Real Decreto 1213/2024, effective July 1, established a unified digital registry to centralize oversight of all tourist accommodations in Spain.
  • Spain’s consumption authority has identified another 54,728 listings without official registration and issued removal or correction demands to booking platforms.
  • Booking.com removed and corrected about 4,000 noncompliant listings last month and platforms have been notifying hosts of their legal obligations.
