Spanberger Leads by 12 as Early Voting Begins in Virginia, CNU Poll Finds

Independent voters give Democrats the edge entering early voting.

Overview

  • The Christopher Newport University Wason Center survey of 808 registered voters conducted Sept. 8–14 carries a margin of error of ±3.9 points.
  • Abigail Spanberger leads Winsome Earle-Sears 52% to 40% in the governor’s race, with 8% undecided.
  • Independents favor Spanberger 55% to 32%, a gap the poll’s researchers say underpins her advantage.
  • Democrats also lead down-ballot, with Ghazala Hashmi ahead of John Reid 48%–37% and Jay Jones leading Attorney General Jason Miyares 48%–41%.
  • Voters cite inflation/cost of living (21%) and threats to democracy (18%) as top issues, while Trump’s approval in Virginia stands at 39%; early voting starts Sept. 19 and Election Day is Nov. 4.
