Spalding United Defender Drives to Wrong Bury, Still Helps Seal 2-1 Win

The mix-up sent Lewis White to Gigg Lane in Greater Manchester before a roughly 200-mile diversion back to Bury St Edmunds for a brief late appearance.

Overview

  • White set off from Leicestershire under his own steam and mistakenly reached Bury FC’s Gigg Lane instead of Bury Town’s ground in Suffolk.
  • He then drove back down the A14 to arrive near the end of the match, with some reports describing about seven hours on the road in total.
  • The defender was introduced late and helped Spalding see out a 2-1 away victory after they had been reduced to 10 men.
  • Manager Jimmy Dean said he asked Bury staff if such an error had happened before and quipped that White must have been in a world of his own.
  • The win lifted Spalding to fourth in the Southern Football League Premier Central, and the club declined further comment to focus on an FA Cup qualifier against Dagenham & Redbridge.
