Spain’s Wildfire Season Sets Record as Burned Area Reaches 373,000 Hectares

Authorities have 23 major fires on high alert across the north and west.

  • Satellite data show another 30,000 hectares burned in 24 hours, bringing the total to about 373,000 hectares, the highest in EFFIS records.
  • At least four firefighters and volunteers have died and local counts say more than 12,000 people have been evacuated from Galicia, Castile and León, and Extremadura.
  • A section of the Camino de Santiago near the Picos de Europa is closed, high‑speed rail between Madrid and Galicia is suspended, and numerous roads are shut.
  • Spain has deployed roughly 1,900 soldiers alongside UME units as EU assistance arrives, including 67 German firefighters and aircraft or helicopters from France, Italy, Finland, the Netherlands, the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
  • After a 16‑day heatwave with temperatures up to 45°C, cooler, more humid air is improving conditions, though major blazes persist in Zamora, León, Ourense and Cáceres.
