Overview

  • Authorities count more than 40 active fires, with 23 labeled especially concerning, concentrated in Ourense, León, Zamora and Cáceres.
  • Burned area totals are already well over 100,000 hectares nationwide; Galicia is nearing 60,000 hectares with Ourense the worst hit and major fronts at Chandrexa de Queixa (~17,500 ha) and Valdeorras (~12,000 ha).
  • Spain is receiving its largest-ever assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, including aircraft and teams from France, Italy, Germany, Finland, Slovakia, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands; Defence says additional troops will support logistics as the UME remains the only unit authorized for direct attack.
  • The human toll has risen to four dead, including a firefighter in León, with evacuations continuing — Castilla y León reports 5,300 people displaced across 76 localities — and 17 homes destroyed in San Pedro de Cansoles (Palencia) after earlier evacuations.
  • High-speed service between Madrid and Galicia remains suspended and several roads are closed, while officials report degraded air quality in hard-hit areas such as Ourense and parts of León.
