Spain's Science Minister Vows Action If CNIO Irregularities Are Proven

The Tribunal de Cuentas is auditing CNIO’s hiring and contracting.

Overview

  • In a congressional appearance, Diana Morant declined to confirm wrongdoing and said any proven offenses will be pursued with full force.
  • She stated that the Tribunal de Cuentas has been auditing the CNIO since January, focusing on personnel hiring and procurement of goods and services.
  • Following the unanimous removals of María Blasco and Juan Arroyo, new manager José Manuel Bernabé was tasked to compile documentation, clarify procedures, and has shared information with the Patronato and the Madrid Provincial Prosecutor’s Office.
  • Morant noted that prosecutors have not formally notified the CNIO of an investigation or requested information, and the board approved an internal reorganization in late November.
  • The audit’s time frame is politically disputed, with the PSOE pushing to extend it back to 2011 and the PP proposing 2018–2024, and ABC reports some private donors have paused contributions.
