Spain’s Rail Network Sees Fresh Disruptions as Power Restored Near Madrid’s Atocha

The latest faults prompted evacuations, road links and emergency protocols across three regions.

Overview

  • An electrical supply failure between Atocha and Vallecas around 19:17 affected Cercanías lines C-2, C-7, C-8 and C-10, leading some passengers to enter the tracks after emergency handles were activated.
  • Adif and Renfe reported power recovery around 19:45, and security personnel began clearing people from the tracks, with affected Cercanías trains and a Media Distancia service to Jaén remaining halted during the operation.
  • In Catalonia, about 100 people were evacuated from a broken-down R14 train between La Plana-Picamoixons and Alcover and were transferred by bus to Tarragona, with the La Plana–Reus section suspended until the stalled train can be towed.
  • Protecció Civil placed the Ferrocat railway emergency plan in pre-alert in response to the R14 incident as Renfe and Adif coordinated towing and alternative transport.
  • In Carcaixent (Valencia), Renfe established replacement buses after an arrollamiento interrupted service, the second at the station in three days, leading to short turns at Pobla Llarga and Alzira and delays on line C-2.
