Spain’s Private Shipyards Post Strong Rebound With €3 Billion Order Book

Industry leaders say the surge shows capacity to support energy and defence needs and must be locked in through innovation, financing and public‑private cooperation.

Overview

  • Pymar reported that private Spanish yards closed 2025 with 65 vessels on order worth more than €3 billion and about 16 million hours of work, the highest activity level in 15 years.
  • Galician yards account for roughly half the orders with 34 ships valued at more than €1.35 billion, making the region a central production hub.
  • Private yards completed over 1,000 major repair and transformation projects in 2025 and posted turnover about 15% above the five‑year average.
  • The sector directly and indirectly supports about 89,000 jobs, contributes roughly €12.7 billion to Spain’s economy, and sends more than 90% of its output to export markets.
  • Pymar and the Industry Ministry urged stronger financial tools, stepped‑up innovation and coordinated public‑private and European policy to preserve industrial sovereignty and turn short‑term momentum into lasting capacity.
