Spain’s New Judicial Year Puts Pujol and Final Gürtel Trials on the Calendar as the ‘Koldo’ Probe Widens

Court timetables put the judiciary at the center of the country’s political season.

Overview

  • The Audiencia Nacional has scheduled the long-delayed trial of Jordi Pujol and his seven children for November, with more than 250 witnesses and hearings expected to run into 2026.
  • The court also plans to hold the final Gürtel trial in November, focused on the network’s laundering and tax-evasion structure with 26 defendants including Francisco Correa.
  • The Kitchen case on the alleged illegal spying of Luis Bárcenas with reserved funds is slated to start at the Audiencia Nacional in April 2026.
  • The ‘Koldo’ investigation has escalated to alleged public-works kickbacks, drawing in former PSOE leaders José Luis Ábalos and Santos Cerdán, whom the Supreme Court has indicted and kept in pretrial detention after a UCO report.
  • Proceedings are tightening around top figures as Attorney General Álvaro García Ortiz remains processed with a trial expected this year, a judge has added malversation to the case against Begoña Gómez with September questioning set, and David Sánchez has been sent to trial pending appeals.
