Spain’s King and Queen Unveil New Lighting at Luxor’s Temple of Hatshepsut

The Spanish-led upgrade opens the site to night visitors, with expanded security.

Overview

  • Felipe VI and Queen Letizia inaugurated the Spanish-made installation on Thursday evening during their state visit, with the King calling the result “spectacular” and “a great success.”
  • The project was led by Tragsa and ISDEFE, and delivered by a consortium of Spanish firms including Varona, Scati, Salicru, Dorlet, Ojmar, Electra Molins, Virtualware and Thomas.
  • ABC reports the installation includes about 3,105 luminaires along a 10‑kilometre perimeter, 512 security cameras, and new screening equipment such as security arches and X‑ray analyzers.
  • The intervention is designed to extend opening hours for nighttime access and strengthen protection of the site to support tourism in Luxor.
  • The inauguration builds on Spanish-backed work at Giza and precedes a planned Friday visit to archaeological excavations in Luxor led by two Spaniards, according to the royal itinerary.
