Overview
- Red Eléctrica de España disclosed on Thursday that data centers account for about 6,328 MW of granted high-voltage connection capacity and that another 15,813 MW of requests are being processed, a combined total near 22,142 MW.
- REE’s updated analysis using CNMC criteria shows firm demand access is available at just over 35 percent of transmission nodes and that roughly 65 percent of nodes currently lack capacity for new large consumers.
- The Spanish government is drafting a royal decree with tougher environmental conditions and hourly renewable-use requirements and the draft has drawn more than 600 formal responses seeking changes.
- Local figures underline concentrated pressure on the grid: Galicia alone has 516 MW of data-center requests in process despite only one publicly known project, Ingenostrum, currently under development.
- The disclosure sharpens a policy dilemma between EU and national goals to expand cloud and AI capacity and the grid’s physical limits, with official forecasts for 3,500–4,000 MW by 2030 sitting against industry plans that assume much larger investment and possible speculative filings.
