Spain’s Food Costs Diverge by Region as Argentina’s Grocery Inflation Ticks Higher

Extreme heat and currency pass-through are shaping short-term food prices.

Overview

  • In Spain, food prices rose 2.7% year over year in July, with Baleares at 4%, Castilla y León at 3.5% and País Vasco at 3.3%, according to INE data.
  • Egg prices jumped 18.3% nationally, led by Navarra (26.7%) and Extremadura (26.6%) versus more moderate rises in Canarias (12.2%) and Catalunya (13.7%), as summer heat curbed egg and milk output.
  • Sugar fell 19.7% on average over the past year, ranging from a 27.8% drop in País Vasco to a 3.7% increase in Canarias.
  • FACUA’s mid‑August check found fresh monthly increases in staples, including oranges (+8.8%), peras conferencia (+4.3%), whole milk (+2.9%) and eggs (+0.9%), while also pressing supermarkets for transparency on margins after VAT cuts.
  • In Argentina, private consultoras measured August food inflation at roughly 2.3%–2.5% on average (LCG, EcoGo), with some punta‑a‑punta readings near 3%, attributing part of the rise to the late‑July and early‑August dollar move.
