Spain’s DGT Sets Record €539.99 Million in Traffic Fines in 2024

An AEA audit links the jump in penalties to intensified speed enforcement.

  • A total of 5,413,507 fines were issued in 2024, representing a 5.14% increase compared with 2023.
  • Speeding accounted for roughly two-thirds of cases with 3,440,530 citations, up 4.10% year over year.
  • Other frequent sanctions included unfavorable or missing ITV inspections (599,202), unlicensed driving (138,980), mobile phone use at the wheel (101,023), and not wearing a seatbelt (100,766).
  • Drug-driving fines rose 5.52% to 57,610, while violations for using visual devices jumped 55.77%; illegal stops or parking increased 18.43%, and negligent driving climbed 18.26%, as helmet and alcohol offences declined.
  • Andalusia logged the highest absolute number of fines (1,425,521), Madrid recorded the greatest density at 202 fines per road kilometer, and one M-40 radar in Madrid issued more than 74,000 tickets.
