Spain’s Defense, Security, Aerospace and Space Sector Sets 2024 Revenue Record at €16.15 Billion

A new study highlights export-led gains alongside a government push to expand SME participation.

  • The PwC/TEDAE report shows turnover rose 16.2% year over year to €16,153 million, led by civil aeronautics (+19.4%), land defense (+42.1%) and defense aeronautics (+10.1%).
  • Exports reached €9,931 million, accounting for 61% of sales, up about 20% from 2023 and generating a €5,554 million trade surplus.
  • The sector supported 260,049 jobs in 2024, including 75,281 direct positions, with high productivity compared with Spain’s industrial average.
  • Companies invested €2,614 million in R&D, exceeding 10% of turnover and representing 29.5% of Spain’s industrial R&D effort.
  • Activity is concentrated in Madrid, Andalusia and the Basque Country, with Madrid alone accounting for 53% of revenue, as officials tout a €10,471 million industrial plan and target growing SMEs involved from roughly 500 to 800 next year and 1,200 the following year.
