Spain’s Cities Switch On Christmas Campaigns With Drones, Mega LED Displays and Revived Nativities

Municipal programs blend spectacle with tradition to boost local commerce and tourism through early January.

Overview

  • Cartagena opened its season with a drone show of about 220 units before more than 10,000 people and launched a calendar of 300-plus activities featuring new recycled-wood decorations and some 30,000 ornamental flowers.
  • Lucena illuminated roughly 1.5 million LED points across its commercial center with more than 300 arches, kicking off a month of events that runs to the Jan. 5 Epiphany festivities.
  • Xàtiva reopened its Belén Monumental with a redesigned route, two new figures by artist Xavier Herrero, ongoing restoration of classic pieces, a Playmobil exhibition through Jan. 6, and a charity collection for AECC.
  • Almería switched on over 1.2 million LED lights with a giant cathedral-like tunnel offering daily shows and a program of more than 120 events across nearly 30 public spaces.
  • Segovia debuted a new light-and-sound pórtico with 23,800 pixel RGB lamps alongside its Christmas market, as other towns reported large crowds such as about 5,000 in Plasencia and weather-driven adjustments in Galicia’s Morrazo.
