Spain’s 270 Kilometres of High-Risk State Roads Pinpointed in New AEA Report

AEA calls for targeted fixes as hazard hot spots persist across administrations.

Overview

  • The analysis of 2019–2023 Transport Ministry data flags 71 routes in 45 provinces where danger indices are at least ten times the national average.
  • Across those 270 kilometres, investigators counted 1,563 crashes and 2,169 victims over five years.
  • By relative risk, the worst point is N-4a km 243 in Ciudad Real at 598 times the average, while A-77a km 0 in Alicante logged the most incidents with 104 crashes and 150 victims.
  • Asturias’ N-632 at Arroes ranks second by danger with an index of 1,172, and three nearby points together recorded 17 injury crashes in the period.
  • Toll motorways remain safer overall but saw higher risk in 2023, with AP-7 km 901 in Almería leading their index at 63.2 and Barcelona’s B-23 km 14 posting the most cases at 43 crashes and 58 injuries.
