Spain’s 2030 Grid Plan Adds Capacity for 100,000 Madrid Homes

The planning change clears demand on paper pending substation upgrades, distributor sign‑offs, construction timelines.

Overview

  • The national draft for the electricity transmission grid was reformulated to include capacity for more than 100,000 homes in Valdecarros, Los Ahijones, Los Berrocales and Madrid Nuevo Norte.
  • Madrid says the change followed 2,566 formal alegaciones from the region and a meeting with the Secretary of State for Energy that concluded on 26 October with a commitment to keep technical contacts with distributors.
  • Regional officials caution that the planning recognition does not guarantee supply because key works remain undone, notably enlargement of the Parla and Algete substations and other network connections.
  • The shortage has already caused denials or limits on urban projects and threatens dozens of data‑centre investments in the region, which include 56 proposals worth about €15 billion and thousands of potential jobs.
  • The national plan has grown in scale to roughly €17 billion and about 6,700 km of new meshing, but approval timing and the practical buildout of substations, lines and distributor agreements will determine whether the paper capacity turns into real supply.
