Spain’s 2025 School Survey Finds Teen Tobacco and Cannabis at Record Lows as Alcohol Use Falls

Officials credit prevention policies for the decline.

Overview

  • The biennial ESTUDES 2025 surveyed 35,256 students across 836 schools and was presented on November 5 by Health Minister Mónica García and the national drugs plan delegation.
  • Alcohol remains the most used substance but fell across all indicators, with drinking in the past 30 days down to 51.8% and both drunkenness (17.2%) and binge drinking (24.7%) at their lowest since 2000.
  • Tobacco and cannabis reached the lowest levels since monitoring began, with monthly smoking at 15.5%, daily smoking at 4.3%, and monthly cannabis use at 11.6%.
  • E‑cigarette ever‑use declined to 49.5% while perceived harm rose sharply to 57.3%, though regular vaping increased among 14–17‑year‑olds.
  • Use of sedatives fell for the first time since 2014 but non‑prescribed consumption remains significant, and the survey notes sex and regional disparities such as earlier smoking initiation in Castilla y León.
