Spain Widens Copper-Theft Probe With Arrests in Cáceres, Valladolid and Granada

Investigators are tracing missing coils sold through metal buyers using false invoices.

Overview

  • Guardia Civil’s ROCA team detained three men in Cáceres over copper coils taken after an August 22 truck crash on the N-523, a load of 24 bobbins weighing about 6,000 kilos and valued at €60,000.
  • Eight bobbins were found hidden near the crash site and a 149‑kilo sack of copper was seized at a licensed scrap firm, where sales were billed in third-party names that prompted falsification complaints.
  • Two alleged thieves were arrested on September 22 and the seller at the metal-buying company was detained on September 23, with detainees, evidence and recovered material placed before the court.
  • In a separate case, Policía Nacional in Valladolid arrested a suspect for the August 1 theft of five copper cable bobbins (450 kilos) from the city waste-treatment center, identified via CCTV and released after statement.
  • Police also reported arrests for other property crimes: two men caught inside a high-end car in Granada with forcing tools and two suspects held for a shop break-in in Valladolid, with stolen items recovered and all presented to judicial authorities.
