Spain to Replace Warning Triangles With Connected Roof Light on High-Speed Roads From Jan. 1, 2026

The measure targets fewer secondary crashes by keeping drivers inside the car, transmitting location to responders for quicker help.

Overview

  • The DGT rule makes the V16 warning beacon mandatory on motorways and expressways, retiring traditional triangles on those routes starting in 2026.
  • Drivers can mount the flashing yellow light on the roof without leaving the vehicle, with visibility reported at up to about one kilometre.
  • An integrated SIM sends the vehicle’s position to traffic authorities and emergency services roughly every 100 seconds only while the device is active, and it transmits location data only.
  • The requirement applies to vehicles registered in Spain, so foreign‑registered private cars are not affected for now, while Spanish‑plated rental cars must be equipped.
  • Retail prices are reported at about €30–€60, and triangles remain permitted on rural roads and in cities though the DGT recommends using the V16 there as well.
