Spain to Extend Unaccompanied Minor Relocation Mechanism to 2027

Thousands still awaiting relocation shift the focus to regional capacity, parliamentary backing.

Overview

  • The government will present a new royal decree to the Council of Ministers before 30 August 2026 to keep the expedited transfer system in force through August 2027.
  • Article 35 enables rapid reallocation from the Canary Islands, Ceuta and Melilla to other regions, a process the minister says has eased overcrowding.
  • Official figures cite 1,143 minors reallocated, while the minister has also referenced 1,800 transfers since September 2025, and the Canary Islands government disputes the tally, reporting 701 from the archipelago.
  • About 3,800 minors still await relocation from the three border territories, and Canary Islands centres currently host 3,596 youths compared with a target of 2,211.
  • The minister said the framework could continue through the current term, while any continuation after 2027 would depend on Cortes majorities, noting PP and Vox opposed the measure.
