Spain Sticks With Jan. 1 V-16 Beacon Mandate as DGT Decertifies Four Models

Following a viral Bilbao video, the traffic agency issued visibility guidance, with no fines for drivers holding decertified units.

Overview

  • The connected V-16 beacon will replace roadside triangles nationwide from January 1 for passenger cars, mixed-use vehicles, goods vehicles and buses.
  • Days before the rule takes effect, the DGT withdrew certification for four specific models already on sale and has not clearly explained the technical reasons.
  • Drivers who own one of the decertified beacons may continue using it for its service life and will not be sanctioned, according to the agency.
  • A widely shared Bilbao crash video showed turn signals appearing brighter than a nearby beacon, leading the DGT to note a 1,000‑metre range only in optimal conditions and shorter in curves, gradients or adverse weather.
  • Authorities recommend placing the device on the roof or at driver‑window height, and they emphasize its connected role in sending the vehicle’s location to the DGT 3.0 platform for road panels and compatible navigation systems.
