Spain Steps Up Nationwide Crackdown on Driver Distraction

The DGT launched a weeklong enforcement and camera operation to cut accidents by targeting phone use and other in-car distractions.

Overview

  • The national campaign runs through October 11 and deploys Guardia Civil traffic units, regional and local police, and DGT road cameras to detect distracted driving.
  • DGT data show distraction is the most common contributing factor in crashes, present in 15,707 collisions (21%) and in 444 fatal crashes (32%).
  • Results from last year's campaign found that misuse of mobile phones accounted for 47.4% of distraction fines, making phones the single most frequent punishable source of distraction.
  • The EU’s General Safety Regulation now requires an advanced driver distraction-warning system in all new vehicles, and safety reviews identify frontal collision alerts, automatic emergency braking, and driver monitoring as the most effective ADAS features.
  • Volunteers from ASPAYM will join roadside outreach to warn drivers about the human cost of distraction, a move that may increase public awareness and support for stronger road design and in-car safety technology.
