Spain Sheds 199,300 Jobs, Worst August Since 2019

Officials call the drop seasonal, citing adjusted payroll gains alongside the lowest August unemployment since 2007.

Overview

  • Social Security affiliates fell by 199,300 from July to 21,666,203, ending six straight months of growth and remaining 476,801 above a year ago.
  • Registered unemployment rose by 21,905 to 2,426,511, the lowest August level since 2007, with services driving the increase and agriculture posting a decline.
  • Seasonally adjusted data showed a gain of 29,836 affiliates, which the government presents as evidence of underlying employment momentum.
  • Job losses were widespread across sectors, led by education (-75,869) and followed by administrative activities (-19,061), industry (-16,763) and construction (-15,455).
  • Contract data underscored persistent temporality as SEPE logged 1,039,962 contracts in August and more than half of year-to-date hires are temporary, while indefinite contracts have declined in 2025.
