Spain Sets July Record for Foreign Arrivals as Growth Cools, With Declines in Catalonia and Madrid

High occupancy is not translating into stronger profits due to restrained daily spending.

Overview

  • INE data show Spain received 11.02 million international visitors in July, up 1.6% year over year, with spending rising 6.1% to €16.45 billion; January–July totals reached 55.5 million visitors (+4.1%) and €76.07 billion in spend (+7.2%).
  • Catalonia and Madrid were the only regions to lose international visitors in July, with Catalonia down 1.2% and Madrid down 3.1%, even as tourist spending continued to grow.
  • In Barcelona, hotel visitors rose 5.6% in July to 906,522, but average stays shortened to 2.46 nights and daily out‑of‑pocket spending fell to about €99, prompting some price adjustments at higher‑end hotels.
  • In the Valencian Community, hoteliers report summer occupancies often at or above 90% and forecast a solid autumn, while INE figures show slower July growth in foreign arrivals (+1.37%) but stronger spending (+8.3%) and slightly longer trips.
  • Regional reports highlight uneven performance: Galicia offset lower ticket averages with more visitors but suffered wildfire‑related cancellations, Andalusia saw contained restaurant receipts despite higher volumes, and Granada’s Costa Tropical logged August occupancies above 90%.
