Overview
- From 1 January 2026, drivers on Spanish highways and expressways must use certified V-16 roof beacons instead of warning triangles.
- Approved devices must connect to mobile networks and transmit the vehicle’s location to the DGT every 100 seconds to aid emergency response.
- The portable yellow light mounts on the roof without exiting the car and is designed to be visible from up to roughly one kilometer.
- The requirement covers Spain-registered vehicles, with foreign-registered private cars generally recognized under EU rules while Spanish rental cars must comply.
- Certified models are already available for about €30–€80, and in Germany the triangle remains mandatory with a €15 fine for relying on a beacon alone.
