Spain Says It Dismantled Sinaloa Cartel Meth Pipeline in Second Phase of ‘Operation Saga’

Investigators describe a scheme that hid meth inside marble imports from Mexico to feed European distribution routes.

Overview

  • National Police, working with the DEA, arrested nine suspects across Madrid, Valencia, Alicante, Málaga and Tenerife, including a Sinaloa Cartel operative and a marble company owner.
  • Agents seized nearly €3 million in cash concealed in a subterranean bunker at a marble warehouse in Alicante province, along with luxury watches, phones, geolocation devices and ammunition.
  • The suspected logistics coordinator who oversaw routes between Dubai and Mexico was detained as part of the latest raids directed by Spain’s National Court.
  • The phase builds on a May 2024 seizure of 1,800 kg of meth, with investigators later intercepting a 40 kg load hidden in a marble statue bound for Tenerife and a 38 kg marijuana shipment to Finland.
  • Three detainees have been sent to prison, and Mexico’s FGR and financial intelligence unit have opened related inquiries into marble exporters, according to Security Secretary Omar García Harfuch.
