Spain Rescues 236 From Adrift Cayuco Far South of Gran Canaria

The operation spotlights persistent gaps in joint search-and-rescue coverage in remote Atlantic waters.

Overview

  • Merchant vessel Teos reported a disabled cayuco about 232 nautical miles (429 km) south of Gran Canaria and secured it with a line before requesting assistance.
  • Salvamento Marítimo deployed the guardamar Urania, which took 236 people aboard at about 02:15 local time and is sailing to Arguineguín for disembarkation and medical checks.
  • The cayuco had no engine and was drifting in a SpainMorocco joint SAR zone, and Spain coordinated the rescue after Morocco reported no vessels available.
  • Separately, a patera with 16 people was brought to the Port of Alicante, where nine were hospitalized including two young girls, and about 15 arrivals were intercepted near Níjar, Almería.
  • Rescue services continue searching for 12 people reported missing after jumping from a different patera on Friday.
