Spain Releases Lamine Yamal After Unnotified Groin Procedure

The federation says it was not told in advance of the radiofrequency treatment, questioning Barcelona’s communication.

Overview

  • Lamine Yamal underwent an invasive radiofrequency procedure on Monday morning to address pubic/groin discomfort, with a medical note advising 7–10 days of rest.
  • The RFEF says it learned of the treatment at 13:47 on Monday and only received the full report at 22:40, then released the 18-year-old from the squad.
  • Rayo Vallecano winger Jorge de Frutos was called up to replace Yamal for Spain’s World Cup qualifiers against Georgia and Turkey.
  • Spain coach Luis de la Fuente said he was “shocked” by the lack of prior information, calling the situation “not very normal.”
  • Barcelona had recently consulted specialist Ernest Schilders and Yamal played and scored in Sunday’s 4-2 win at Celta Vigo, as a long-running club–country dispute over his pubalgia and workload flared again.
