Spain Orders Poultry Confinement in 1,199 Municipalities to Curb H5N1 Spread

Officials attribute the move to heightened migratory risk, with full biosecurity rules now in force.

Overview

  • The national order, effective Nov. 10, requires outdoor flocks to be kept under cover in designated risk areas, with regional tallies including Catalonia 224, Andalusia 197, Galicia 40, Madrid 16, and Valencia 138.
  • Measures also prohibit outdoor rearing without protective netting, suspend bird shows, restrict untreated water sources, ban Anseriformes and Charadriiformes decoys, and separate ducks and geese from other poultry.
  • Castilla-La Mancha announced complementary rules to extend confinement requirements across all municipalities in the region this week.
  • Spain has reported 14 poultry outbreaks since July 1 and has culled more than two million laying hens, while health authorities say human infection risk remains very low and properly cooked poultry and eggs are safe.
  • Egg prices have jumped, with official data showing roughly 16% increases this year and about 18% year on year, consumer groups reporting rises near 50%, and some supermarkets pricing XL dozens near €5.
