Spain Orders Platforms to Pull 2,373 Illegal Balearic Holiday Lets
The purge follows a new national registry check intended to return housing to residents.
Overview
- Madrid identified the listings through the central short‑term rental register, flagging offers without valid numbers and directing platforms such as Airbnb and Booking to remove them.
- Since January, authorities have processed nearly 265,000 applications for tourist rentals and rejected about 54,000, largely due to incomplete or incorrect documentation.
- Rejections were highest in Ciutadella (299), followed by Sant Josep de sa Talaia (178), Santa Margalida (133), Santanyí (117), Es Mercadal (96) and Palma (54).
- Officials say the crackdown is meant to shift unlawfully used tourist flats back to the local market, which could tighten accommodation availability in peak season.
- Separately, Palma’s airport faces recurring handling‑staff strikes by Ryanair contractor Azul Handling through year‑end on Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays during specified time windows, with earlier actions causing delays.
