Spain Names Sonia Bermúdez as Women’s Head Coach as Montse Tomé Exits

  • The RFEF confirmed Montse Tomé will step down when her contract expires on August 31 after leading Spain since September 2023
  • Sonia Bermúdez, most recently in charge of the under-23 side, has been promoted to head coach of the senior women’s national team
  • Former Athletic Club midfielder Iraia Iturregi will join Bermúdez as assistant in the senior coaching setup
  • The federation also appointed David Aznar to oversee the under-19 and under-20 teams and Milagros Martínez as under-17 coach
  • The leadership overhaul follows criticism of Tomé’s substitutions in the Euro 2025 final shootout defeat to England and a bronze-place finish at the Paris Olympics
