Overview
- Wildfires have consumed nearly 115,000 hectares across Galicia, Castile and León and Extremadura with 39 active blazes still burning as drought and temperatures above 40°C hinder containment.
- At least three people have died and more than 3,000 have been displaced in Castile and León as smoke advisories increase and high-speed rail services between Madrid and Galicia are suspended.
- Spain has deployed around 3,500 UME troops, over 5,000 Guardia Civil officers and 350 national police to battle the fires and assist with evacuations.
- Two Canadair amphibious aircraft and crews from Italy, Germany, France, Slovakia and the Netherlands are supporting operations through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism.
- Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez returned to affected areas, announced 500 additional UME soldiers and called for a national state pact to strengthen climate adaptation and fire prevention.
