Spain Mobilizes Road Safety Operation for 6.5 Million Santiago Weekend Trips

Traffic authorities concentrate patrols, radars, Pegasus helicopter, alcohol-breath checkpoints on routes most vulnerable to heat-driven fatigue

Overview

  • Operation Santiago runs from July 24 at 15:00 until July 27 at midnight, covering an estimated 6.5 million journeys nationwide.
  • Galicia’s Apóstol weekend plan forecasts over 550,000 local movements with the highest volumes in Pontevedra and A Coruña.
  • More than 200 radars, ten Velolaser units, nearly 60 unmarked vehicles, over 30 cameras and the Pegasus helicopter are deployed on secondary and coastal roads.
  • The DGT warns that extreme heat can raise accident risk by up to 20% and urges drivers to stop every two hours or 200 km, stay hydrated and ventilate the cabin.
  • Since July 1, Spain has recorded 90 traffic fatalities and Galicia’s urban road deaths have fallen 17.5% compared with last year.
