Spain Logs 106,172 Abortions in 2024 as Government Presses Regions Over Private Reliance

The health minister ordered regional plans to move the service into the public system, warning inspections or legal action could follow.

  • Official data show a 2.98% annual rise to 106,172 procedures in 2024, equal to 12.36 per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44.
  • Only 21.25% were performed in public facilities versus 78.74% in private clinics, with regions such as Extremadura, Andalusia, Castilla-La Mancha, Madrid, Murcia, Ceuta and Melilla near 100% private provision.
  • Several territories exceed half of procedures in public hospitals, including Cantabria, Galicia, La Rioja, the Balearic Islands and Catalonia.
  • Early access predominated with 76.58% before eight weeks; public centers used medication more often (21,320 cases) while private clinics mainly used surgical methods with over 63,000 extrahospital procedures.
  • Ministry figures also note 11,699 abortions among those under 20 (+6.99%) and that 49% of women were not using contraception, with the government finalizing a plan to provide free condoms to 16–22-year-olds.
