Overview
- The Dirección General de Tráfico activated a special speed-control device running Monday, August 3 through Sunday, August 9 that deploys the Agrupación de Tráfico de la Guardia Civil to set up checkpoints and radar controls.
- Checkpoints will use both static and mobile radars with a heavier focus on motorways and autovías in Andalusia and an increased presence on conventional roads in the province of Pontevedra.
- The DGT says inappropriate speed is the third most common concurrent factor in collisions and estimates that 10–15% of all accidents and about 30% of fatal crashes are linked to excess or unsuitable speed.
- The operation continues a pattern of stepped-up enforcement after a national April campaign that checked nearly 1.9 million vehicles and last year’s Andalusian summer device that identified speeding in about 10.9% of vehicles checked.
- Drivers are being reminded that since 2022 it is forbidden to exceed the posted speed limit by 20 km/h to overtake on conventional roads and that the intensified controls could raise the chances of fines and traffic delays for summer travelers.
