Spain Imposes Permanent Arms Embargo on Israel, Blocks Military Flights and Fuel Ships

Sánchez says the package is meant to stop what he calls genocide in Gaza.

Overview

  • Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced a permanent ban on Spanish sales of weapons and ammunition to Israel.
  • Spain will deny airspace to aircraft carrying military material to Israel and bar tankers supplying fuel to Israel’s forces from docking, with ports also closed to Israeli ships carrying defense systems.
  • The package includes a ban on imports from occupied territories, new limits on consular services for Spaniards in West Bank settlements, and entry bans for those alleged to have taken part in crimes in Gaza, with identification procedures not yet detailed.
  • Madrid will increase humanitarian support by adding €10 million to UNRWA funding.
  • Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar condemned the move and barred ministers Yolanda Díaz and Cira Rego from entering Israel, while Spain’s Sumar party urged Sánchez to go further by recalling the ambassador.
