Spain Heat Deaths Reach 2,405 as New Fatalities Reported in Plasencia and Córdoba

Spain's MoMo system reports a sharp August surge with 931 heat-attributable deaths in 16 days.

  • Spain has recorded 2,405 heat-attributable deaths through Aug. 16, already exceeding the 2,012 reported for all of last summer, according to the MoMo monitoring system.
  • AEMET reported extreme weekend temperatures, with readings above 40°C at 266 stations on Saturday, 56 above 42°C and five exceeding 44°C.
  • Regional authorities confirmed two recent deaths linked to high temperatures: a 70-year-old man in Plasencia who fell ill while fishing and 77-year-old Manuel Ariza Serrano in La Rambla while walking.
  • Mediterranean sea surface temperatures remain unusually warm, with anomalies of up to 3–4°C above the annual mean in areas such as the Gulf of Lion and the Girona coast, according to CEAM.
  • Mexico's federal health ministry reported 57 heat-related deaths so far this heat season, including 20 in Sonora, highlighting concurrent impacts beyond Spain.
