Spain Guarantees €4,930 a Month for Severe ALS Care as Regions Decide How to Implement

The new Extreme Dependency Grade is now in force and regional governments must adopt it to activate the full benefit for eligible patients.

Overview

  • After an extraordinary Territorial Council, Minister Pablo Bustinduy pledged full cooperation with autonomous communities and announced a €500 million reinforcement for the dependency system.
  • The benefit can reach €9,868 per month to fund up to five caregivers, with the state covering a fixed €4,930 and regional governments responsible for any top-up.
  • The Xunta of Galicia voiced distrust over delivery, citing insufficient dialogue and warning that complex assessments could limit access, estimating only 5% of Galician patients may qualify.
  • The ministry countered that the new grade expands existing support and urged regions to recognize it quickly, while patient group ConELA welcomed the change as a major step.
  • Although the decree is already in effect, final validation by Congress and the pace of regional adaptation will determine how soon patients receive the new aid.
