Spain Grants Pardons to Two of 'Los Seis de Zaragoza' Convicted Over 2019 Anti‑Vox Protest

The decision follows favorable reports from the prosecutor and the sentencing court.

Overview

  • Spain’s Council of Ministers approved pardons for Francisco Javier Aijón, known as Javitxu, and Adrián Latorre, who have spent a year and three months in the Zuera prison.
  • Families said they expect the two to be released next week once the measure is formalized.
  • Two co-defendants, Imad M. B. and Antonio Daniel L. D., remain in prison on the same convictions.
  • The case arose from clashes around a January 17, 2019 protest in Zaragoza against a Vox rally that resulted in injuries to six officers and convictions for aggravated public disorder, assault on authority and injuries.
  • The Supreme Court previously reduced adult sentences to four years and nine months, and while the pardons commute prison time, close to €200,000 in fines and civil liability largely remain, according to the platform supporting the defendants.
